West Highland Way joins the Appalachian Trail

The West Highland Way has been named as the first European leg of the International Appalachian Trail (IAT). The existing trail runs over 2,178 miles from Georgia to Maine and the plan is to attempt to "reconnect" North America and Europe through the trail, which used to be part of the same land mass before the formation of the Atlantic ocean about 130 million years ago.

Organisers of the International Appalachian Trail (IAT) have listed the 96 mile West Highland Way as part of the famous trail. Under the plans the trail will stretch from Canada and Newfoundland, across the Atlantic into Greenland, Ireland, Scotland, Norway and down to North Africa.
