Newcastle is a major transport hub in the Northeast of England and has excellent rail, road and air links from both Scotland and the South of England.

Arriving into England

By Air:
Nearest International Airport: Newcastle Airport or Manchester International
The metro rail service operates to Newcastle city centre (journey time 25 minutes). There is a regular rail service between Manchester airport and Newcastle (journey time 3 hours).

By Sea:
Nearest Ferry Terminal: North Shields
Regular services from Holland, Norway and Sweden dock in North Shields. Transfer to Wallsend or Newcastle via buses from North Shields then take the Metro.

By Rail:
Nearest Railway Station: Newcastle
There are train services from London Kings Cross to Newcastle (journey time 3 hours).

By Road:
If you plan to travel by car it is usually possible to leave it at the Guest House or Hotel at the start or end of your walk, for the duration of your holiday. We can check this for you when your booking is confirmed. Newcastle is also accessible by National Express coaches.

Getting to Wallsend

From Newcastle train station, take the Metro to Wallsend.

Returning from Bowness-on-Solway

By Rail:
There are a few bus services from Bowness-on-Solway to Carlisle railway station although no services on a Sunday (journey time 1 hour). Alternatively it is easier to take a taxi to Carlisle. Regular train services then operate to London Kings Cross (journey time 5 hours 30 minutes) and north to Scotland on the West Coast line. If you need to return to the start then you can catch a train from Carlisle to Newcastle on the Tyne Valley line.

By Bus:
National Express coach services serve Carlisle.

Hadrian's Wall Bus:

A special bus service - the Hadrian's Wall Bus - operates daily along about half the length of the Wall throughout the Summer months. It stops at all the key locations (including Vindolanda, Birdoswald, Chesters, Once Brewed and Housesteads). Train Tickets
Great savings can be made by buying your train tickets in advance through the Trainline website at
www.thetrainline.com. Although tickets can only be mailed to a UK address, overseas customers can still order tickets in advance and collect them from a Fast Ticket machine in the UK. Fast Ticket machines are located in most mainline railway stations.
