Herriot Way

Travel Information

Detailed Travel Information for the Herriot Way will be supplied in your Information Pack, but the following may help with your planning.

Getting to the start and end of the walk at Hawes you can travel by public transport, as it is well linked.

Arriving into England

By Air:
Nearest major International Airport: Manchester
Nearest Regional Airport: Leeds-Bradford

Manchester Airport is the closest international airport to Hawes. You would then take the train to Leeds and connect to a train to Garsdale (journey time 3 hours). There is also a regional airport at Leeds-Bradford.

Getting to and returning from Hawes

By Rail:
Nearest Railway Station: Garsdale / Leeds / Carlisle

The nearest train station to Hawes is Garsdale, which is on the main Leeds/Carlisle line. However, Garsdale is 10 miles from Hawes. A local bus service (the Little White Bus) runs from Garsdale Station to Hawes, making four runs a day. These runs correspond with the train arrival times and may wait if the train is delayed. More information can be found by clicking here. You could also take a taxi to Hawes from the train station.

After you have completed the walk you can make use of the Little White Bus service once again to make your way back to Garsdale Station. You can then connect to trains going north to Carlisle or south to Leeds.

By Road:
If you plan to travel by car it is sometimes possible to leave it at the Guest House or Hotel at the start or end of your walk, for the duration of your holiday. We can check this for you when your booking is confirmed.

National Express coaches to Leeds or Carlisle can then be used in conjunction with a local bus service, such as Dales and District buses.

Train Tickets
Great savings can be made by buying your train tickets in advance through the Trainline website at
www.thetrainline.com. Although tickets can only be mailed to a UK address, overseas customers can still order tickets in advance and collect them from a Fast Ticket machine in the UK. Fast Ticket machines are located in most mainline railway stations.
