Travel Information

Detailed Travel Information for the Skye Trail will be supplied in your Information Pack, but the following may help with your planning. Getting to your first accommodation at Flodigarry and from the end at Broadford you can travel by public transport.

Arriving into Scotland

By Air: 
Nearest Airport: Inverness
Nearest Major International Airports: Glasgow International and Edinburgh

Getting to Flodigarry

By Rail: 
Nearest Railway Station: Kyle of Lochalsh
There are 4 rail services a day to Kyle of Lochalsh (the nearest point of the mainland to Skye), departing from Inverness. These take approximately 2 hours 40 minutes. From Kyle of Lochalsh you could take a taxi to Flodigarry (which would cost approximately £70-80), or local buses, changing at Portree. The journey by rail to Inverness from both Edinburgh and Glasgow central stations is approximately 3 hours 30 minutes. 

By Road: If you plan to travel by car it may be possible to leave it at the Guest House or Hotel at the start or end of your walk, for the duration of your holiday. We can check this for you when your booking is confirmed.

The Scenic Journey:
You could take the scenic journey to Skye, which is an experience in itself. From Glasgow you would take the incredibly picturesque West Highland railway line all the way to the port of Mallaig (journey time 5 hours 20 minutes). The final stage of this journey from Fort William to Mallaig can be done by Jacobite Steam Train. From Mallaig then take the Calmac ferry “over the sea to Skye” (30 minutes). At the Port of Armadale on Skye you could take a taxi to Flodigarry (1 hour 40 minutes), or take local buses. 

Returning from Broadford

By Bus:
The Citylink Bus from Skye passes right through Broadford. From here the journey to Inverness takes 2 hours 30 minutes, and to Glasgow it takes 6 hours 10 minutes.

By Rail:
From Broadford it is either a 15 minute taxi or a 20 minute bus journey to Kyle of Lochalsh. This can either be on the national Citylink buses, or on the more local Stagecoach buses. From Kyle of Lochalsh there a 4 rail services a day to Inverness, journey time approximately 2 hours 40 minutes.

Train Tickets
Great savings can be made by buying your train tickets in advance through theTrainline website at Although tickets can only be mailed to a UK address, overseas customers can still order tickets in advance and collect them from a Fast Ticket machine in the UK. Fast Ticket machines are located in most mainline railway stations.
