Cateran Trail Highlights

  • The lively town of Blairgowrie, the focus of the Perthshire soft fruit growing industry
  • The breathtaking scenery of Strathardle, Glenshee and Glen Isla - discover mountains, lochs and glens
  • Walk in the footsteps of the ‘Caterans’ - marauding cattle thieves who flourished in this lawless part of Highland Scotland from the Middle Ages to the 17th century
  • Discover the abundant wildlife, flora and fauna, and wild scenery of Highland Perthshire

The Cateran Trail is a delightful circular route through some of Scotland's finest glens. The route follows old drove roads and ancient tracks across a varied terrain of farmland, forests and moors.

Beginning from Blairgowrie, a charming town renowned for its soft fruit growing, the trail heads clockwise towards Strathardle, Glenshee and Glen Isla. The nearest village is never more than 7 miles away, and the gradients vary from easy to moderate.

Charming towns and villages along the trail offer a real taste of Scotland. Relax in country inns and former hunting lodges, enjoy good food and local produce, craft beer and malt whisky, and true Scottish hospitality.

Soak up the dramatic mountain views, contrasting with gentle rolling farmland and reflect on the wild and lawless times of the Caterans.

The trail travels through a neglected part of Scotland, but the route is well-established and fully waymarked. You will find yourself enamoured with the beautiful, peaceful landscape and quaint villages. The Cateran Trail is one of Scotland's Great Trails.
