Getting to the start of the walk at Ellington (which is a village close to the official start at Cresswell) and from the end at Berwick-upon-Tweed you can travel by public transport, as they are both well linked.

Arriving into England

By Air:
Nearest major International Airport: Newcastle
Newcastle Airport is the closest airport to Ellington. The metro train service operates between Newcastle Airport and Newcastle city centre (journey time 23 minutes).

Getting to Ellington

By Rail:
Nearest Major Railway Station: Newcastle
There are train services from London Kings Cross to Newcastle (journey time 3 hours).

The closest train station to Ellington is at Widdrington. From Newcastle you can catch a train to Widdrington (journey time 30 minutes). From Widdrington you can catch a bus directly to Ellington (journey time 5 minutes).

There is no accommodation in Cresswell so you will spend your first evening in Ellington. A short walk or bus journey the next morning will bring you to the start of the Northumberland Coastal Path in the village of Cresswell.

By Road:
If you plan to travel by car it is usually possible to leave it at the Guest House or Hotel at the start or end of your walk, for the duration of your holiday. We can check this for you when your booking is confirmed. Newcastle is also accessible by National Express coaches.

Returning from Berwick-upon-Tweed

By Rail:
Nearest Railway Station: Berwick-upon-Tweed

Berwick-upon-Tweed is on the East Coast mainline and regular train services operate on this route - London Kings Cross (journey time 4 hours), Newcastle (journey time 45 minutes), Manchester (journey time 3 hours 30 minutes) and Edinburgh (journey time 45 minutes).

By Road:
Berwick is also accessible by National Express coaches.

Train Tickets
Great savings can be made by buying your train tickets in advance through the Trainline website at Although tickets can only be mailed to a UK address, overseas customers can still order tickets in advance and collect them from a Fast Ticket machine in the UK. Fast Ticket machines are located in most mainline railway stations.
