South West Coast Path (Plymouth to Exmouth) Highlights

  • Dive into Plymouth's maritime heritage and explore the cobbled streets of the historic Barbican District
  • Traverse one of the most beautiful sections of the entire South West Coast Path from Hope Cove to Salcombe
  • Venture through the dramatic cliff tops, deep wooded valleys and secluded beaches of South Devon
  • Explore the bustling seaside towns of Salcombe, Dartmouth and Exmouth
  • Take in the bright lights of Paignton Pier
  • Indulge in freshly-caught delights of the sea

This wonderfully varied section of the South West Coast Path (SWCP) takes you from the historic maritime streets of Plymouth and follows the coastline of South Devon.

The trail passes through dramatic headlands, densely wooded areas, bustling seaside towns and steep coastal valleys to finish in Exmouth, one of the oldest seaside towns in Devon.

Take in the secluded beach-fringed landscape and contrasting lively towns of Salcombe, Dartmouth, Brixham and Paignton, as you wind your way along the coast. The section of the SWCP between the seafaring city of Plymouth and Exmouth is diverse in both the nature of the trail and the settlements you will visit en-route, making it an exciting, impressive and fulfilling journey.

This National Trail is also well-waymarked, allowing you to truly enjoy the variety of fascinating heritage, wildlife, geology and spectacular scenery along the way.

While this section of the SWCP would typically take 8 - 10 days to complete, we would recommend that you plan to walk shorter distances than you normally would, due to the steep ascents and descents along the route. We would also recommend planning for additional rest days, in order to fully take in all that this stunning coast has to offer.
